Meet the presenters: 

Kashmir Uppal joined Shoosmiths in May 2016, having previously been a Partner and joint national lead for clinical negligence at Thompsons Solicitors, where she also ran the local team. Kashmir won the accolade of ‘Partner of the Year’ at the Birmingham Law Society Awards 2018, beating off competition from several big name firms, in part in recognition of her work on behalf of patients injured by rogue breast surgeon Mr Ian Paterson. 

She also won ‘Clinical Negligence Lawyer of the Year’ at the national Eclipse Proclaim Personal Injury Awards in November 2018. Again, along with other considerations, her campaign to expose Ian Paterson’s criminal behavior and deliver justice to those he injured impressed the judges who unanimously agreed to award her this prestigious title. Kashmir has been a member of the Law Society’s specialist clinical panel since 2004, having specialised in clinical negligence since 1996. 

Most of her clients have suffered significant and serious injuries and her extensive experience results in multi million pound settlements. These cases include children and young adults who have suffered brain injury at the time of or shortly after birth. In addition she has worked on a range of complex cases including amputations, spinal cord, head injuries and fatalities, securing significant compensation. 

Her particular expertise is in multi-party actions, having been the lead solicitor in the complex litigation arising from the surgical procedures performed by the disgraced breast surgeon, Mr Ian Paterson. She was involved in the criminal and regulatory proceedings that led to his conviction and being struck off the GMC register and pivotal to raising the profile of the issue including campaigning to secure a change in the law to protect patients treated in private hospitals. 

Kashmir is the lead Solicitor in a number of claims relating to surgery performed by Mr El - Maghraby, a Consultant Neuro surgeon both in the NHS, at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and also a number of private Midlands hospitals.

Rhiannon Stokes is an experienced occupational therapist and case manager, who strives to revolutionise the case management sector with a personalised and innovative approach. Through Stokes Case Management, she promotes collaboration across healthcare and legal fields to ensure high-quality support for clients facing diverse challenges.

With over a decade of experience as an Expert Witness, Rhiannon brings extensive knowledge of legal processes and professional standards. As Managing Director of Stokes Case Management, she maintains a clinical caseload, specialising in severe disabilities, which informs her team's innovative service delivery.

Rhiannon's dedication extends beyond her professional role, as she actively contributes to charitable initiatives for people with disabilities. She is also committed to education, regularly lecturing at Cardiff University and presenting at conferences nationwide.

Rhiannon is the Vice Chair at CMSUK and also leads on the Membership Committee.

Empathetic and dedicated, Hannah Adam qualified as solicitor in 2005, initially specialising in Children’s Public Law, acting for both parents, guardians and then for a large Local Authority acting for Children’s Services in the magistrates and County Courts. 
 
In 2012 Hannah moved to specialise in Special Educational Needs (SEN) Law. Being the parent of a child with complex special educational needs Hannah is uniquely placed to understand, empathise, and represent parents at even the earliest stages of parenthood when difficulties can arise for their child. Parents appreciate having the opportunity to discuss matters with a solicitor who has the depth of personal and professional experience she brings to the role. 
 
Hannah has represented parents and young people at SEN Tribunal and has secured settlements and placements at highly specialist and high cost facilities. She has worked on a number of cases for 52 week specialist residential placements jointly funded by health, social care and education concerning meeting the needs of children with extremely complex and multifaceted needs always securing a positive outcome for those families. 
 
Hannah’s diverse expertise both education and social care obligations towards children with complex needs and she is able to advise on issues of disability discrimination, transitions, school transport for children with SEN and the role of social care. 
 
By working closely with parents and young people, Hannah aim’s to resolve cases through negotiation wherever possible and secure the best outcomes for families.

After qualifying as an Occupational Therapist in 1994 from the University of Derby, Kate Heward began her career on a mental health rotation in Birmingham. It was during this time that she discovered a passion for neurology, leading her to specialise in the field. Over the years, Kate held several senior OT roles within the NHS, with her final post being as a Clinical Specialist in Neuro Rehabilitation at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, which she left in 2005.

While working as a clinician in the NHS, Kate began a master’s degree which later evolved into a PhD at Leeds Beckett University. She successfully completed her PhD in 2008—while pregnant—demonstrating her remarkable dedication and multitasking skills. During this period, she also worked as a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at Sheffield Hallam University, where she led on the teaching of neurorehabilitation and vocational rehabilitation, all while maintaining a small caseload in the private sector.

Kate has worked in the private sector since 2002, initially part-time, and in 2009 she founded Rehabilitate Therapy. Since then, the organisation has grown into a thriving community of Occupational Therapists, stretching from the Scottish Borders to London, and from the West across to the East of England—including a small step into Wales. She takes great pride in what the business has achieved as a family-run organisation.

Kate is deeply passionate about truly "occupational" occupational therapy and bespoke rehabilitation. Her particular interests include independent living trials, community integration, and vocational rehabilitation, areas in which she continues to lead and innovate.

Katie Edwards heads up the Private Client Team at NewLaw Solicitors, she acts as a Professional Deputy and is also a Director of NewLaw’s Trust Company. Katie moved to NewLaw in 2011 to set up their Court of Protection team having worked closely with the Personal Injury and Court of Protection Teams at Hugh James.

Katie is passionate about Deputy work and is well versed in the challenges of the role. Katie has focused on establishing a Team that is accessible and collaborative understanding the importance of working closely with therapy teams, case managers, litigation teams, clients and families. This is challenging work and there are often no right or wrong answers. The key is to communicate and work well as a team to support and empower people to make as many of their own decisions as they can and be there to support them when they cannot. Katie has worked on complex cases for both children and adults often involving the purchase and adaptation of properties, safeguarding concerns, complex care arrangements, investment of multi-million-pound settlements also working with personal health budgets and direct payments. 

Out of work Katie is mum to two busy boys who like to keep her on her toes.
