About our Presenters
Judith James - Director, Education and Case Management Services Ltd
Assessor of children and young people with a range of SEND including cerebral palsy, ABI, sensory impairments, SLC, ASD which leads to advice, training, support and guidance for all staff. Advice on EHCPs, funding, intra-disciplinary working and alternative approaches for all learners who need new or bespoke learning opportunities.
Karen Burgin - Director, Karen Burgin Ltd
A Registered General Nurse by profession, who, following a clinical career within acute, post–acute, community and vocational rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injury, moved into case management. For over 20 years, Karen has been involved in the establishment and development of child and adult case management services within the statutory, voluntary and private sectors. With specific expertise related to services for those with catastrophic injury, Karen has a particular interest in child brain injury and its’ associated challenges.
Karen has been Director for a number of charities including Headway, and Trust Ed. She is an advanced member of BABICM and a past Council member. Following 13 years as Director/Clinical Director for a National provider, Karen established her own Company delivering case management to adults and children with catastrophic injury. She supplemented her skills in 2018 during a career break by completing mediation training which further adds to her skill set and supports work undertaken within the case management arena. She is a strong advocate for the development of a professional case management community and is Director of the newly formed Institute of Registered Case Managers and Chair of CMSUK.

Mike Thrussell - Director, Access:Technology

‘’I firmly believe technology is the great equaliser. Seeing this in action with our amazing clients is incredibly exciting’’Mike has over ten years experience working with adults and children with learning difficulties and disabilities using Assistive Technologies.
He has led several funded projects including sharing best practice using Assistive Technologies to educational institutions, developing accessible web resources for users of assistive technologies and reviewing the accessibility of open educational resources.
Mike presents regularly at conferences on best practice using Assistive Technologies and is experienced with developing hi-tech communications aids including systems manufactured by SmartBox, Liberator, Tobii Dynavox, Toby Churchill and AAC applications created for the iPad.
Frances Henderson
Qualified in primary education, Frances has expertise in many aspects of education and had worked for over twenty years in both mainstream and special schools before joining a charitable organisation, which had two outstanding, non-maintained special schools, in 2007.
Frances has taught across the entire age range of 3 – 19 years and the whole breadth of abilities including children with PMLD, life limiting conditions, cerebral palsy and ABI, hearing and visually impairment, ASD and challenging behaviour.
She currently works for Education and Case Management Services which provides independent advice to families, case managers, legal professionals and schools and works as part of multi-disciplinary teams to establish integrated education and therapy packages and how best to implement legislation to establish Education, Health and Care Plans. She supports individual packages at a practical level to ensure that education pathways are appropriate to the child or young person’s needs and this particularly includes home education programmes, which are designed to maintain the EHCP where possible.
