Webinar: An Introduction to Spinal Injuries

CMSUK are excited to offer this online learning opportunity; an Introduction to Spinal Injury for Case Managers who are new to working with spinal injury clients, covering the basics of the injury and needs of the clients.

Learning aims:

  • To provide an introduction to spinal injury for Case Managers who are new to working with spinal injury clients, and cover the basics of the injury and needs of the clients
  • To gain an understanding of complications associated with spinal injuries to include bladder/bowel management
  • To learn about the MDT team involved in SCI cases
  • To gain an understanding of the current theory of working with patients who have a spinal cord injury
  • To understand the organisations that can offer support to patients and their families
  • To gain an understanding of the rehabilitation team involved with patients with SCI
  • To learn the responsibility and role of the deputy in relation to funding equipment and services
  • To explore vulnerable clients and capacity
  • To review options available to manage a client’s money
  • To learn about conflicts of interest and other issues deputies face and how this can relate to the role of the Case Manager

Speaker One

Name: Lisa Brown

Job title: Case Manager, Director Coastal Case Management Ltd., Director, CMSUK

Profile: In 1996 Lisa graduated from Southampton University in 1996 with an honours degree in Physiotherapy. She started her physiotherapy career in Portsmouth Hospitals (NHS) where she developed a special interest in musculoskeletal and trauma cases, including spinal cord injury and ABI.

In 1997 she was invited to work as one of the team of GB physiotherapists for children with learning disabilities at the Special Olympics, providing her with a unique perspective of the challenges faced and overcome by young athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities.

In 1999 Lisa won an award for writing the policy and training on demand package for equality and diversity within Portsmouth hospitals. Her passion to seek to improve patient care took her into clinical audit, where she led an audit into outcome measures on orthopaedics shortly before successfully winning NHS contracts as an independent provider.

A company director for two decades and Managing Director of Coastal Case Management Ltd for the past 10, she also designed and built a rehabilitation centre to include the provision of hydrotherapy. During this time Lisa has successfully procured and managed waiting list initiatives within NHS hospitals reducing wait times for colonoscopy, endoscopy, and orthopaedics. She was also responsible for leading teams of surgeons, doctors and nurses, demonstrating outstanding management skills.

A sought after expert witness for 13 years, in criminal and civil cases for both Claimants and Defendants, she applies such invaluable experience in her case management work. 

In her case manager capacity, Lisa works on complex cases for both paediatric and adult clients with a special interest in spinal injury. ABI and cerebral palsy and on single and joint instruction cases.

She has extensive experience in the design and build of rehabilitation transitional units, enabling clients with complex trauma, including those with a brain injury, to safely transition from hospital to independent living. 

Passionate about the growth of case management in the UK and an active member of the CMSUK and BABICM, Lisa is leading research into the efficacy of exoskeletons to enhance the evidence base for the broader use of such equipment in case management and medicolegal cases.  

As a director of CMSUK, she is delighted to be a part of such a prestigious and worthwhile organisation, and to ensure best practice in our industry.

Speaker Two

Name: Eva Sobonova

Job title: Head of Physiotherapy, The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital

Profile: Eva is an immensely valuable member of the interdisciplinary team at The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital which she joined in 2007.  She has been Head of Physiotherapy since 2014 where her passion for the rehabilitation, goal attainment and outcomes of the patients is obvious.  Eva gained her qualifications and ultimately a Masters Degree from the University of Health Care and Rehabilitation in Slovakia and had a vast amount of experience working in the field of physiotherapy before settling at The Royal Bucks.  She has extensive clinical experience in assisting those with spinal cord injuries and a range of neurological conditions.  Eva combines hands on therapy, with the latest rehabilitation technologies including all forms of functional electrical stimulation, virtual reality treatment and all robotic exoskeletons.  She is one of only a few certified Indego instructors in the world and travels the globe instructing on its use. 

Speaker Three

Name: Philippa Barton

Job title: Solicitor, Partner at Hodge Jones & Allen and head of the HJA Court of Protection team.

Profile: Philippa is a solicitor who specialises in acting as professional deputy and trustee for mentally incapacitated clients.

Philippa is listed as a recommended practitioner in the Chambers guide to top lawyers. She is also ranked in the Legal 500 list or recommended Court of Protection solicitors. Her 2017 entry reads: Hodge Jones & Allen has a “highly dedicated team of specialists. Clients feel that they are not only getting expert advice but also a very personal service”. Team head, Philippa Barton, has “a complete understanding of this practice area, and provides clear and precise advice”. The team is well versed in property and affairs deputyships for clients who have received high-value personal injury awards.

Philippa specialises in acting as professional deputy and trustee for clients with substantial damages awards. Her expertise lies in all aspects of financial management and best interests’ decisions.

Her clients are either mentally incapacitated or vulnerable. Their families are often under financial and emotional pressure because they care for someone with serious disabilities. She is sensitive and sympathetic in her dealings with clients and their families.

She has experience of managing a wide range of complex family and financial circumstances. Conflicts often arise as to how far the client’s family can benefit from the client’s funds.

Philippa takes a pragmatic and sympathetic approach to resolve difficult issues but also has experience of resorting to court proceedings where necessary.

Philippa is an accredited member of the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners and a professional member of Solicitors for the Elderly, a specialist panel of solicitors acting for vulnerable clients and those lacking mental capacity.

Philippa regularly publishes articles in the legal press on issues relating to deputyship and vulnerable clients.
